As we celebrate the CPS Codillians who represent our island in Brazil this past weekend, we would like to take a deeper dive into each one of this team\u2019s performance in the three key FLL Challenges areas at the Puerto Rico Championship to see what makes up this winning team!\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Today we take a look at their Robot Design + Robot Game:<\/span><\/p>\n

The most visible, and arguably most exciting, part of every FLL Challenge event is the Robot Game. During the Robot Game, teams place their pre-programmed robots on the table and cheer them on as they attempt to complete the highest number of missions and achieve the most points possible within 2.5 minutes. While this is indeed a highlight of many of the events, it only showcases a small part of what teams must achieve during the Robot portion of the Events and Championships.<\/span><\/p>\n

Behind the scenes, teams must meet with the judges and present and justify their mechanical design, explain the quality, efficiency, and automation of their programming and highlight their innovation and strategy. During this time, judges are also evaluating the teams on their level of teamwork and ownership over their own learning.\u00a0 Let\u2019s relive some of the CPS Codillians highlights from the Robot Design + Robot Game!<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0We were truly impressed by this team’s eloquence and attention to detail with regards to their robot design, strategy and programming. It was extremely evident that the team came up with all aspects of their robot design and programming themselves, relying on their coach only for guidance when they needed extra motivation or help. They shone in their presentation and truly earned their high ranking in the Robot Design category. Blue, the name they gave their robot, has a highly intentional design and a very efficient and well organized programming.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mechanical Design:<\/b><\/p>\n

How did you go about the design and construction of Blue and its accessories?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

In the previous competition that we participated in we used the EV3 robot, and this robot had only one arm. We keep this idea and build it out of Spike parts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At first, the new robot was so light that every time it braked it would lurch forward. To fix this, we added weight to its back. While the problem of the robot was going forward when braking was solved, we found out that when turning the robot needed a lot of space, and\u00a0 because of that\u00a0 it\u00a0 could\u00a0 not\u00a0 fulfill\u00a0 several\u00a0 missions\u00a0 with\u00a0 this\u00a0 structure. So, we talked\u00a0 to\u00a0 resolve\u00a0 this and with the help of our mentor we decided to add another identical arm in the back part.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Once\u00a0 we\u00a0 programmed\u00a0 and\u00a0 tested\u00a0 the\u00a0 robot\u00a0 with\u00a0 the\u00a0 arms,\u00a0 it\u00a0 worked\u00a0 fine,\u00a0 and\u00a0 depending\u00a0 on\u00a0 the\u00a0 mission we made changes.<\/span><\/p>\n

Programming:\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

How many programs do you have? What missions does each tackle?\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

We had 4 programs. Each program had a lead programmer:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      \n
    • Program 1- Unload cargo plane, Switch engine and unused capacity\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Program 2 \u2013 train load cargo, repair train track, bridge\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Program 3 \u2013 Innovation project, unload cargo ship, placing the train in the area\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Program 4 \u2013 trucks balance, accident avoidance\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      How many sensors did you use and how?\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

      \u00a0We use the distance sensor, color sensor and the gyro sensor that is part of the hub.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

          \n
        • Distance sensor:<\/b> The robot always leaves in a North direction. The distance sensor is on its back. The distance sensor senses the robot’s distance from the south wall and allows it to determine how far the robot must turn to go to different missions.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
        • Color sensor:<\/b> We use the color sensor in reflection mode. In the different runs, the color sensor detects the reflection of the black lines and under this condition the robot stops.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
        • Gyroscope sensor:<\/b> We use the gyroscope in the different programs to make the curves more accurately.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          How did you organize your programs?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

          To ease the organization of our programming, we established the following methodology for each large program:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

          • \n
              \n
            • Split the program into several small programs<\/span><\/li>\n
            • In each small program, the robot must go through and carry out specific actions that help to achieve the final goal.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
            • For the division of programs, we use the event blocks: \u201cBroadcast a message and When I receive a message.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
            • Each small program must have a name that guides us in what the robot does.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
            • Each small program must be in order and to the right of the previous one.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
